This beautiful inro depicts the famous fight between the young warrior Yoshitsune and the grizzled (like me) veteran Benkei. On a bridge in Kyoto, Benkei is crouching down to swipe with his huge Naginata while Yoshitsune, being young and agile is leaping up to avoid the cut.

This is a "Firestarter Netsuke", used like a small flintlock gun for starting fires while stopping for the night when travelling; they come in all grades and conditions: this one is one of the bst. To help our move I am selling it from my personal collection for $7500. It is convered in gold overlay, and is in perfect condition. Since these are everyday use items all that I have seen selling for about $4000 each have been very plain and very worn; that is to say all color and metalwork rubbed and degraded. Mine is perfect, as you can see. The gold is completely untouched and not a single gold petal or area is gone. Extensive gold on top near the hammer. Button on the side works perfectly. Made in Higo circa 1750, Higo is famed for its fine sword fittings and the works of the famed Samurai Swordsman Miyamoto Musashi. Rare, wonderful, desirable netsuke, ...
